College Nordmetall!

College Nordmetall is happy to welcome you to your new home and our new website! The building we are living in has been transformed into a place we can now call home and we hope that this will quickly have the same sense of belonging for you.

We are also just taking our first steps towards forming our college identity by exploring what we want and what we can make happen. This is a process in which you will personally have a chance to be actively involved and really see your ideas take shape.

The first democratic decision we made in our first semester was to be the yellow college. This colour reflects both our sunny nature and also the solar panels providing our home with energy. Purple is our second colour and provides a stunning contrast to the sun as well as a necessary alternative to those of us for whom yellow t-shirts are not a good look!

The arrival of our mascot, Nils the polar bear, followed by the official naming of the College after the main sponsor, has given us another few building blocks towards deciding who we want to be.

As for the facts, College Nordmetall is Jacobs University’s fourth and newest residential college and will host about 250 students from different countries and fields of study. The architects “Böge Lindner” located in the City of Hamburg were in charge of the construction project. They were already awarded for their successful re-development of the former Roland-Kaserne Barracks into the present Jacobs University campus.

The college has 83 double and 100 single apartments and offers the newest and most exciting recreational facilities to its students; a huge common room complete with table tennis, air hockey, table football, pool and darts; a state of the art multimedia room; a dance room and a picturesque garden.

The first batch of students moved into College Nordmetall in January 2009 while several parts of the building were still under construction. They named themselves the “College IV Pioneers” as the college was not named back then. The pioneers together with the highly committed college office team supported the ongoing construction, brought life into the new college and shaped it for future generations of students.
